In the backdrop of the ancient Irish resistance (sometimes brutal and bloodthirsty) to English (oftentimes brutal and bloodthirsty) conquering and subjugation, this book meticulously covers a shocking assassination and its subsequent complex, complicated, convoluted (and sometimes crooked) trial. In the book's assassination and trial coverage, it delves into the following closely related occurrences and events: outstandingly gallant and fiendishly reprehensible politics and political machinations; a heroic and brilliant Irish Catholic police officer (dubbed "The Irish Sherlock Holmes"); a brilliant, calculating, admired and despised Irish politician, ultimately doomed by a passionate, all-consuming, loving & lovely but highly controversial and complex, ultimately doomed love affair; intricate, insidious and illustrious international political intrigue, almost concurrently occurring in and between Paris, London, Dublin and New York, with a number of Irish counties, towns and hamlets, some London suburbs, Washington, D.C., Cannes and Santiago all playing small but crucial and critical parts; a highly intelligent, passionate, politicized and daring British royal who had a beautiful, passionate, loving, highly criticized, disastrous, tragic and doomed love affair with an Irish Member of the English Parliament (House of Commons); the allegiance and acrimony between religion and royalty; one of England's greatest and most memorable, loved, idealistic and sometimes criticised Prime Ministers; and many other fascinating, gratuitous, inspiring and shocking facts, personages, details and occurrences. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robert O'Brien -- Labor of Love : This book was a labor of love because the author's forebears emigrated to South Africa in the 1850s during the Irish Famine and her parents started to research Patrick O'Donnell's murder of James Carey in South Africa. Her great grandparents celebrated Patrick O'Donnell as an Irish patriot. Mr Carey and his family were being transported to South Africa under the Witness Protection Program for informing on his fellow Irish Activists who assassinated Tom Burke and Fred Cavendish, English overseers of Ireland, in 1882 in Dublin. Irish Home Rule was hotly debated between Charles Parnell and William Gladstone which eventually got through the House of Commons but not the House of Lords and Queen Victoria. The Queen hated Gladstone for trying to dismantle her Empire for Ireland was the Crown Jewel, and many of the members of the House of Lords were feudal landlords in Ireland, including Fred Cavendish's father, the Duke of Devonshire. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Duke2 -- The Book Cover Had Me Going : The book cover promised intrigue, drama, and suspense. Instead I found a slow and laborious pacing relating to the historical events. I really tried to plow through it, but gave up about 1/2 of the way through. Part of my difficulty with it was lack of familiarity with British customs and government. I had to do lots of looking up of terms and about how the British parliamentary system works. Also, I had to do a lot of map look ups to understand where many places referenced in Ireland were. From all of the research I did to try to better follow the book, I felt I learned a lot, but it did not compel me to complete reading the book. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2021 )
