:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bev T. Allen -- "Silas Marner" : Loved reading this book again! I read it when I was in high school many years ago and now I am 90 years old! I attended the local school in Pottersville, NY and I have good memories of that. My parents Stuart & Helen Mead built Black Bear Restaurant as we raised a black bear cub to adulthood and had a little zoo of small wild local animals. Our black bear Annabelle would stand up high and we would feed ice cream cones to her! We also served food inside and had gas pumps in front. Later we sold the place and moved to Melbourne, Florida. Our parents have passed on but my sister June and I still live here and speak often of our childhood memories in the Adirondack Mountains. God bless!🎎 ( Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2017 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION : Whoever decided to take this terrific piece of 19th Century art and cram it into a tiny book packed like 20th Century Art Deco, has a lot to apologize for. The cover is the least of the offenses. This quick-buck scammer has no concept of interior book design and contented themselves with piling all the words on as few pages as possible. This ‘edition’ comes in at 128 pages. Simon and Schuster’s edition comes in at 262 pages. The paragraphs are unjustified, the gutters (gap on the inside seem) are almost non existent so the reader has to pry the book open with a lot pressure to read the print at the fold, and the type is so tiny I’d need a magnifying glass to read. Unbelievable. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ella Mc -- Rare for the era, few pages bring many rewards : Funny story: I read this ages ago with my mother when I was very young. We read it together. She had read it with her mother. But over the years, I'd forgotten most of it. I knew it involved a weaver and his daughter. But in my brilliant mind, I meshed it with Rumpelstiltskin. What a shocker when nobody spun any gold! ( Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Crafter -- Delightful production! : We loved, loved, loved and were obsessed with the FOTF Radio Theater Narnia series. We listened to the cds for a couple of years almost every time we were in the car. My kids are the kind that don’t like anything new (correction, don’t THINK they like anything new), but I finally convinced them to try listening to the Christmas Carol, and of course they loved that. My dad recently had surgery for a detached retina and had to spend time resting without straining his eyes, so I bought this one and Ben-Hur for him to listen to. He liked them both. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mentalfloss1 -- Unusual and engaging : I found this to be an unusual and engaging tale, but if you choose to read it be prepared for quite a lot of archaic language and vernacular from the mid-1800's. I read it on Kindle and was still unable to find the meaning of some words, but for the most part that seemed to not affect my understanding of the novel. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from Anne -- Gobbledegook! : This version of Silas Marner appears to be the result of a very poor double translation; certainly the first page had a number of nonsensical sentences. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 21, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Dowden -- A Personal Favourite : Ever since I first read this many years ago it has always remained a firm favourite of mine, and so it was great when my local book group decided to make this our next read, which not only myself but many others have all read before. Written by Mary Ann Evans, best known to us all as George Eliot this was first published in 1861 and was by the author’s own admission the favourite of her novels. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from RYAN FIENNES -- Everyman's Library Classics Edition : I purchased this book in the Everyman's Library Classics Edition. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 15, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from NW Engineer -- Poor translation; not fit for purpose : The illustration shown above is not the one on the website which I oredered earlier. However BOTH versions degenerate into gobbleydegook. Some reviewers suggest this is because of an imperfect translation from another language but didn't George Elliot write in English? - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Cairon A. -- A taste of history : The storyline with its subplots were engaging but scenes with the pub banter when Silas got robbed was excessive especially as it felt like extensive translation was needed to progress. Godfrey turned out ok in the end and Eliot did right by readers where Godfrey's brother was concerned as he got his comeuppance for being such an unpleasant so n so. It took a while to get into it but once in I was hooked. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 10, 2021 )
